The book is roughly divided into two sections. The first section has a history of kites and covers kite tradition around the world. This section also includes some basics of kite flying such as tying knots, wind conditions, kite terminology and useful tips for making kites. The second section is a collection of kite designs presented as scale drawings. The kite plans do not go into enough detail for a novice kite builder to construct a complicated design without reference to other guides. There are no step-by-step instructions. The plans are more like sketches that can be taken as a starting point and provide an overview of the diversity of kite designs. Comment Was this review helpful to you? Yes No Probably the best kite book around. By John Morse-brown on 8 Oct. 2013 Format: Paperback Verified Purchase I bought this because I used it when I was a kid so it has big nostalgic resonance... But don't do what I did - which was go for the most complex project (the Parafoil kite), AND attempt to make one twice as big as the instructions suggest... Good for sewing skills, bad for the history of flight. Comment Was this review helpful to you? Modern kites are surveyed in color photos and plans. He also includes detailed diagrams of some great kite reels and other kite equipment. No, it's not a How-To book with any step-by-step insctructions. But if I were stuck on a desert island with one kite book, this would be it. It's a slim, large format paperback, with much more content than you'd think by looking at the outside. 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful A classic work on kites-essential for an enthusiastic flyer 15 Oct. 1997 By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com Format: Paperback Pelham's Book of Kites is the most essential reference for any person who is interested in the history, construction and flying of kites. It shows a large variety of designs and ideas for kites of all sorts. The actual construction techniques are sometimes left up to the reader to figure out but there is enough information to work from. Well worth the search for a copy. There is no way I let go of mine!!!! BEST KITE BOOK EVER. 12 Dec. 2014 By JANET HALL - Published on Amazon.com Format: Paperback Verified Purchase This is still the greatest source of information and plans for the novice and experienced kite flyer and kite maker! I cherish my copy and have often given this book as a gift to anyone I like who expresses an interest in kiting. Many or the other books on the subject I have come across are useless for entertainment or instruction. This book gives interesting history and many plans for making kites in a form that can be adapted for small to large kites. I wouldn't be without it.
